This street is called Nizhny Novgorod Arbat: it is she who introduces many tourists with the city. The development of large Pokrovskaya stone buildings began at the end of the XVIII century, at about the same way in the people they began to call the noble - here were mansions and ownership of the most noble people of the city. Today, a walk through Big Pokrovskaya becomes a brief excursion to the history of Nizhny Novgorod XIX and the beginning of the XX centuries: richly decorated facades of the estates and profitable houses give a comprehensive idea of eclectic in architecture.

National Bank

At the Big Pokrovskaya there is an elegant complex of buildings of the State Bank, built in 1911-1913 on the project of the architect Pokrovsky (such an irony). The construction of the complex was timed to the three hundred dollars of the house of Romanov. According to the legend, the turret with a clock had to be built in one night before the visit of Emperor Nikolai II, to hide the balcony of a nearby house from him, whose tenants did not differ as a shortness and could compromise the head of the Russian Empire.

Administrative buildings of the bank were made in the unquestous style, and the inner decoration fully corresponds to the facades. Thus, the sketches for the paintings of the ceilings developed the famous artist Ivan Bilibin, and decorative ceramic elements were created at the production of no less famous Peter Vaulina - his Mayolike decorates the hotel Metropol, the building of the Tretyakov Gallery and the interiors of the Yaroslavl Station.

Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin

By the Big Pokrovskaya Street you will go to the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin - this is the most ancient part of the city, the first fortifications appeared here in the XIII century. The complex is considered the only Kremlin, the foot of the enemy did not go on the territory of which, even during the Great Patriotic War, the fortress was used as a defensive structure: anti-aircraft guns were installed on several of the thirteen towers). Noteworthy the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin and its wall, one of the longest in Russia: its length is more than two kilometers, and the height difference between different parts of the wall is about eighty meters.

The monumental staircase connecting the central part of the city and the quay of the Volga was one of the most expensive architectural projects of the 1950s in the USSR (its construction cost seven more than millions of rubles). For the anniversary of the lower staircase restored - work should be completed in the summer of 2021.

Christmas street

From the Nizhnevolzhskaya embankment, you can climb the Christmas street with a well-preserved historical building. In the XIX century, she was the main trading artery of Nizhny Novgorod: in low buildings in the spirit of provincial classicism there was a set of offices, hotels and shops. Many consider this street one of the most beautiful in the city, so it should be included in the route.

Bank of gunshots

By the end of the XIX century, the Christmas street turns into a financial and commercial zone: business institutions and banks begin to appear here. One of them is the complex of the bank of merchants of the mushrooms, designed by Fyodor Shechor. A facade decorated in the style of rational modernity: a fairly strict, but still decorated with floral ornaments (Shechor made it in order to more organically enter the building in an existing building). Sculptures on the entrance created the famous sculptor Sergey Konenkov, who was called Russian Roden - long before the faith of Muhina, he created the statues of workers and collective farms, symbolizing the Union of Industry and Agriculture. Behind the bank building is an industrial building, which also designed Shechor. Facing the facade of this building is decorated in a neo-style style.

Gallery Futuro.

You can get a bit from looking at the facades in the Gallery of Contemporary Futuro Art, where there are exhibitions, lectures and film images. There is a gallery in the building of the XIX century, so you will get acquainted with the works of young artists you will be in a very authentic setting: the walls of the Twilight Hall for exposures have been preserved in primevarial form.

Interesting fact: It was in this building that the author of "Alice in Wonderland" Lewis Carroll, who came to Nizhny Novgorod, stopped in 1867. Then the house occupied the hotel, which the English writer responded as follows: "... We stayed at the hotel Smirnova (or something like that) - truly sad place, but, undoubtedly, the best hotel of the city. They feed here well, but with all other services the situation is extremely bad. "

Christmas church

Closer to the end of the Christmas street you will see the church with the same name - this is a vivid representative of the special direction of Baroque, known as Stroganovsky style. Religious buildings commissioned by industrialist Grigoria Stroganov were distinguished by a lush decor, but at the same time they retained the traditional silhouette for the Russian church.

Hall interiors are decorated in accordance with modern aesthetics: Pay attention to the smooth bends of the marble staircase, wooden wall panels, plant ornaments, luxurious stained glass windows with peacock and bas-reliefs with girls in reed thickets. According to the legend, the merchant of Arseny Markov lost his favorite daughter Mashenka: she had a wedding with her fault of her groom and she was drowned in the river. In memory of the daughter, the father decorated the house with its sculptural images.

It is the house of the coaching of Kashirin that is described in the story "Childhood" - the interiors and the situation of the end of the XIX century are recreated just on this autobiographical book.

If you are interested in the life of Gorky, you can plan and visit the Writer's Museum-Apartments, in which he completed the play "on the bottom" (for this, however, will have to go to the opposite part of the center - towards the barbaric street).

Modernism of Nizhny Novgorod

The neighborhood of the Barbarian Street is to study and lovers of Soviet modernism: several landmark structures are located in this area. One of the most characteristic buildings is the Theater of the Young Spectator of 1978 (its design with a large-scale glazing of the facade sends to the avant-garde). Also worth paying attention to the concert hall "Jupiter" and a new building of the Nipolygraf typography (an old building also deserves attention - this is an excellent sample of rational modern).

Where to have a snack "Ceylon"

Asian Bistro "Ceylon" is inspired by the journey to Sri Lanka - the atmosphere here really resembles a relaxed vacation somewhere in Asia, as well as the authors of the high level.

"Yula"

On October Street there is a pizzeria with the best Naples Pizza in the city and a wine bar connected to it with a wide selection of wines (despite the overall location, these are two independent projects). The interior of the bar is designed by the FruitDesign studio and attracts attention to a bar counter with a tabletop of a highlighted marble.

Pastarama.

The restaurant Italian cuisine, attracting visitors in many ways to its design: the walls are decorated here with huge panels from the tile.

"Pykin"

For Russian flavor and tea drinking, go to the restaurant "Pykin", located in the former estate of the Nizhny Novgorod merchant Pyatov.
