A number of cities in Kazakhstan renamed the first years after the independence of Independence - Guryev - in Atyrau, Shevchenko - in Aktau, and some of the names of the Russian Empire and the USSR were only transferred to the Kazakh Lad: for example, Ust-Kamenogorsk - in Dexen, and Semipalatinsk - in families.
At the same time, in some cases, the discussion on the need to renaming and returning historical titles has been launched for many years, as in the case of Pavlodar and Petropavlovsky. So, one of the most active discussions on this occasion was developed in 2008, when the deputies that initiates the proposal to rename Petropavlovsk to Kyzylzhar were not supported by everything, and some were at all - they reacted skeptically. Some argued about the unreasonableness and nonsense of such a decision. Later in 2010, the ex-deputy of the Parliament of the Zharaba Suleimenov addressed a request for renaming to the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. Despite the fact that this proposal was widely discussed by the public, Suleimenov's request was perceived for his personal position, and opponents of renaming were approved that "Saints Peter and Paul guard the city."
However, now the situation has changed. Speakers for the refusal of the "Soviet" names became more. For example, after territorial complaints from the proviscial deputies of the State Duma of Russia, the requirements to rename Pavlodar and Petropavlovsk frequent.
In the north and in the central regions of the country there are many other settlements, which can return historical names or rename them in accordance with the historical names of the localities, on which they are located: Rudny, Lisakovsk, Sergeevka, Mamlutka, Bulaevo, Derzhavinsk, Shchuchinsk, Stepnyak, Stepnogorsk and others.
At the same time, the reinpection of the names of the Times of the Russian Empire to the Kazakh Lad is also regularly criticized. For example, the new names of Semipalatinsk and Ust-Kamenogorsk - Families and Osemen - have arranged not all Kazakhstanis. Supporters of renaming Semey refer to the fact that in 1918, Semipalatinsk called Alas - by the name of the government Alash Horde. That is why some believe that the city should be called now. The current name of the "families" of any semantic load, in the opinion of supporters of renaming, has no and only is the interpretation of the old name. Sometimes it is possible to rename desemined to AltaiCent.
In the east of the country there are other cities that can be renamed in theory - among them Serebryansk and Kurchatov.
In the west of Kazakhstan, the name of the city of Oral was also criticized, since Zhayik consider the historical name of the administrative center of the West Kazakhstan region. In this region, not renamed cities remained. One of them is Fort Shevchenko.
In 2012, they were offered to rename and Zhanaozen. Local Aksakala voiced this offer when meeting with Akim of the Mangystau region. According to the elders, the current name of the city has no geographical nor political justifications - there are no rivers next to the city, and Zhanaozen's name was given as a result of a chaotic historical sequence.
In Central Kazakhstan to cities that can rename, are Saran, Priozersk and Shahtinsk.
In general, the question of onomastics in Kazakhstan is actively discussed from the first days of independence. It is noteworthy that often issues of renaming are discussed years, but there are also separate examples when the most important decisions on renaming are accepted immediately, and without any "public discussion".
Recall, on January 5, Tokayev in his article "Independence above all", expressed the opinion that the case of the return of historical titles on the example of the Turkestan region can be continued throughout Kazakhstan.
