Thus, some studies have shown that the mutations of the CD38 gene with a single-flowed polymorphism RS3796863 are responsible for our knowledge and behavior in paired connections. The authors of the new work - psychologists from the University of Arkansas and the State University of Florida (USA) - decided to check whether there was a connection between this variation in the gene and the inclination to maintain the relationship, the levels of confidence and forgiveness and, therefore, satisfaction in the early years of marriage.
"We wanted to find out if some of the reasons why people may be harder to maintain satisfaction with relations in the early years after the wedding, with some potential underlying genetic predispositions. The assumption was that people with CC genotype (compared to AC or AA) will report a higher level of gratitude to their spouse. And given the evidence that people with CC genotype demonstrate other qualities that contribute to the establishment of connections, we investigated the correlation between RS3796863 and forgiveness and trust, "said Anastasia Mahanov's scientific group. The article with the results was published in the journal Scientific Reports.
Experts took data 71 couples of newlyweds. Samples of their DNA (saliva) were collected three months after the wedding. Also, the participants filled out the questionnaires at this stage, as well as every four months for three years. At the end of the study, the results of the surveys were compared with genotyping.
"People with the CC genotype (compared to AC / AA) RS3796863 reported more than high levels of gratitude, trust and forgiveness, which was mediated between RS3796863 and marriage satisfaction. The encouragement provided by partners of the CC genotype holders was maintained during the first three years after the wedding, "the researchers write.
Although the results indicated a connection between our genes and marriage satisfaction, scientists stressed that it should not be at all that people without the above variation in the CD38 gene are not able to build a strong and happy relationship.
"The point is not that people who are not related to the CC genotype are doomed to problems. But yes, they have more chances to face certain difficulties, so maybe you will have to try. In general, our results offer a new understanding of important factors that are able to help or prevent newlyweds in the first few years of living together, "Mahanov summed up.
