Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) laid the basis of the third frigate of the project 17A for the naval forces of India. All planned to release seven vessels of this class. Four of them will be built by MDL, three - GRSE. It is known that MDL laid the basis of two more ships of the project 17a - in May 2019 and September 2020. GRSE laid the foundation for its second frigate of this class in January 2020.
According to official data, 80 percent of project ships 17a are built using materials and equipment of Indian production. More than 2000 local firms are involved in the supply chain. Recall, the project 17a is the largest combat ship, which was built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited. This frigate is also the first GRSE vessel equipped with a gas turbine. In order to implement this project, the company expanded the infrastructure of the shipyard of Calcutta and upgraded production.
Nilgiri class frigate (project 17A) is an improved ship of 17 Shivalik project for Navy India. These ships are built using minority technologies and have new radio absorbing coatings, composite materials and add-in "faceted" form. The vessel is equipped with a 127-mm gun, two 30 mm anti-aircraft artillery settings of AK-630 M, two torpedo devices, starting plants for eight supersonic BRAHMOS rockets and 32 earth-air missiles Barak-8. Its main radar is MF-STAR from IAI.
It is known that the length of the frigate is 149 meters, width - 17.8 meters, displacement - 6670 tons, sediment - 5.22 meters, range - 5,500 maritime miles (10186 kilometers). The maximum speed of the warship reaches 28 knots (51.8 kilometers per hour), the crew consists of 226 sailors.
