The user has disabled access to Apple ID and all services due to the missed payment on Apple Card credit card

Because of the challenges that the company offers, it turned out to be blocked in ICloud, App Store and other ecosystem applications.

Designer and Investor Dustin Kortis told in his blog that Apple disabled his Apple ID after he mistakenly missed the Apple Card credit card.

As a result, he lost access to the ICloud, App Store, the "calendar" and other services - and on all devices, and the access recovery passed with errors and delays from Apple support.

How Curtis has discovered blocking

At the end of February 2021, the designer began updating applications in the App Store on Mac and encountered an error: "Your account is disconnected from the App Store and iTunes." Curtis decided that this is a bug, but the next day the Music application stopped working, and the services became unavailable and on the iPhone. For example, the Apple Handoff function was disabled, but IMESSAGE and "Photo" worked.

He tried to contact support, but there could not help and offered to wait for a call from a more serious specialist the next day. Nobody called.

Repeated request in support also did not help: an employee "I missed about Apple Card," said that he had "not enough powers", and Apple ID refers to another department with which you can contact only email.

He wrote them, and Curtis continued to wait.

What led to the blocking Apple ID

Curtis identified a sequence of actions that led to blocking:

  • In January 2021, he bought MacBook Pro M1.
  • When placing an order, Curtis accepted the offer to give in Trade-in Old MacBook Pro in the account of payment of a new laptop. The balance he paid through Apple Card.
  • After buying, Apple had to send the packaging to send an old laptop to the surcharge, but she never came, and Curtis forgot about it.
  • In mid-February, Apple sent a letter with a request to return the old MacBook Pro, what he replied that still waiting for the packing kit.
  • Apple did not answer the letter and attributed a lost discount to the balance of Apple Card and tried to write off the money. But it failed, since Kortis has changed a bank account from which the money was automatically transferred to Apple Card.

After an unsuccessful write-off, Apple blocked Apple ID and sent a letter in which explained the cause of the lock.

There were several inaccuracies in the letter. The company claimed that Kortis bought an iPhone, not MacBook, and the return address is presumably specified with the typo - "preceivables" instead of "receiveables", drew the 9To5Mac.

At the same time, the letter speaks about blocking the purchased, but unpaid laptop, while Kortis has blocked access to the account on all Apple devices.

Kortis solved the problem and tried to send a letter at the specified address, but it was not delivered. Technical support refused to help and could not find a problem.

As a result, the designer through the business chat Apple contacted the Goldman Sachs representative (Apple Card Partner). That was confused, but was able to send a letter to the Apple department to activate the Apple ID - with a callback for several days.

On March 1, Kortisu called Apple employee and explained that with the repeat activation command, you can only contact mail, and this process will take at least 3-5 business days. But after a few hours, Apple ID unlocked.

Curtis admits that he himself made mistakes: I forgot about the exchange of laptops and did not fix a bank account to pay Apple Card. But at the same time the blocking process calls "extremely disturbing":

  • Apple officially stated that it would "hold accounts hostage," until he receives payment.
  • In the letter specified iPhone instead of MacBook Pro, and iTunes no longer exists - the lack of attention to the details is unpleasant, given the seriousness of the threat.
  • The message was sent only a few days after the delay of Apple Card.
  • Charged payments with Apple Card differ from ordinary purchases and may have serious consequences that are not mentioned in the contract when connecting a credit card.

9to5mac and iMore also recognize that blocking an unpaid device can be fair to avoid fraud cases.

But if the Apple Card user blocks all devices at once due to any problems with payment - this is a much more serious thing, especially considering that Curtis was regularly paid for the ICLOUD disabled.
