Setting up a selected server is a fantastic way to play Valheim with friends. Instead of relying on one person as a lead, your group may have a permanent world for creating and researching, which is available at any time. But many players face the same problem: their dedicated server is not displayed in the Valheim game server browser. Even if you are looking for your server by name, there is a chance that it just will not appear for your friends.
This is an unpleasant, but well-known problem in the community, and it is apparently caused by the fact that the browser inside the Valheim gaming server does not list all available dedicated servers. While Valheim developers will not find a better solution, fortunately, there is a truly simple solution that you can try. Some tried to play together on a dedicated server for several days, and this decision that ultimately worked for us.
How to fix the lack of dedicated Valheim serversRisching seem trivial, the first thing you need to do is make sure your dedicated server really works correctly. Regardless of whether you rent it or place your own, perhaps you can restart it and double-check the name and password to make sure that this is not a simple mistake. Reloading the game can also help, because it will make the game update the list of dedicated servers that it shows, but it is very random.
The best method, right now, do the following:
- Open the Steam client (does not matter if Valheim is already running).
- Select the menu View in the upper left corner and select the Servers option.
- This will open the STEAM Server Browser. Select the Favorites tab.
- Click the Add Server button.
- Enter the IP address of the selected server, which you are looking for, with a port, added to the end after a colon (explained below).
- Now your server must appear in the list. Select it and click Connect. Enter password.
- This will open Valheim (perhaps you will have to re-enter the password in the game), and it must automatically connect to your server.
The only thing that can confuse you is a little about the IP address. If you rented the server, your provider must give you an IP address that looks about as 99.99.999.999:99999 (with the exception of random numbers). This is the number you want to insert into the Steam Server Browser.
Depending on your particular servers provider, additional steps may be required. Nodecraft, for example, recommends the subtraction of 1 out of the last digit in the address. It is worth visiting forums for your specific provider and check if other players have any advice characteristic of this provider. However, from now on, you will need to use the STEAM server browser to connect to your Valheim server until the developers improve in-game browser.
Why do you need a dedicated server at all?The big advantage of the allocated Valheim server (also called Community Server) is that it creates a permanent world to which your friends can join at any time. If you do not have it, then one player must be the owner, and everyone join your world, but they can access it only when this player is on the network and actively hosts the server. Therefore, if you build a cute house in your friend's world, and your friend will not be online, you will not be able to access it.
