Apple sued the use of the "Butterfly" keyboard in MacBook

Anonim

Butterfly type keyboard, which replaced the "scissors" in Apple laptops a few years ago, let them find their buyer, but in most cases received negative reviews. The keyboard itself can be not bad (for example, due to low landing of the keys, less dirt and dust is clogged), but several defects were associated with it. So, many users complained that the keyboard is imprinted directly on the laptop screen. Apparently, there were so many dissatisfied that on Apple was not just sueded, a collective claim was put forward against it.

As Verge writes, the lawsuit applies to all MacBook models with a butterfly keyboard. For the first time it was presented in a 12-inch MacBook, which was released in 2015, and then appeared on the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. A single lawsuit was first filed back in 2018, but now it will be considered as a collective claim. At the moment, the plaintiffs are users who bought MacBook with a butterfly keyboard in seven US states: California, New York, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and Washington.

The claim features a 12-inch MacBook (acquired from 2015 to 2017), MacBook Pro (which was produced from 2016 to 2019) and MacBook Air (from 2018 to 2019).

Court against Apple

What exactly accuse Apple? Users believe that Apple knew that the "Butterfly" type keyboard was faulty. At the disposal of the representatives of the plaintiffs, there is even a correspondence between Apple employees in which they are not too flattering responding to a new keyboard at that time.

Apple argued that this claim should be recognized as collective as it covers several different butterfly keyboard options. The plaintiffs ultimately proved that regardless of the design, design of the keyboard and generation MacBooks, the keyboard "Butterfly" is defective:

Now Apple will have to prove that the "Butterfly" is not really a defective mechanism, and that the company has not spent the years to consciously create defective keyboards. A law firm, which represents the interests of users, invites all MacBook users of the above-mentioned generations (only from the USA) to join the claim. So they will have much more chances to win.

The design and ergonomics of "butterflies" were successful, however, due to the design features that Apple could not be eliminated, the keyboards were not too reliable. They clogged, failed, the recommended Apple methods of "repair" almost never helped. For the replacement of the keyboard, when the annual (or two-year one, as in Russia and some other European countries), the warranty period was to give 700 dollars. In 2016, the cases of the outlet of the keypads were not yet massive - so after a 12-inch MacBook, they also came to the MacBook Pro.

From 2016 to 2019, Apple has released four (!) Generations of the new keyboard, however, could not defeat all its problems. As a result, MacBook Pro 16 at the end of 2019, as well as the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13, which came out from 2020, Apple returned the "scissors" mechanism. Including in the new generation of laptops with the M1 chip. The classic design (scissors) is used in the industry from time immemorial, including Apple (in all Magic Keyboard variants). It is not necessary to get used to it, it does not cause fatigue, she is reliable - at one time it also happened trouble, but the identified flaws were eliminated, and for many years they have not heard about them.
